Temperament & Personality

Australian Shepherds are known for their:

  • High intelligence: They’re problem-solvers and extremely quick learners.
  • Strong herding instinct: Originally bred to herd livestock, many Aussies still have a natural drive to “herd” people, animals, or even kids.
  • Loyalty & affection: They bond closely with their families and are very people-oriented.
  • Protective nature: They can be reserved or cautious with strangers but are rarely aggressive.
  • Energy & enthusiasm: This is a very active breed that thrives on physical activity and mental stimulation.

Exercise & Training

  • Exercise needs: Extremely high. They need at least 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily.
  • Activities they enjoy: Agility, obedience, frisbee, hiking, swimming, and of course, herding.
  •

Intelligence

  • Aussies are among the top 10 smartest dog breeds in terms of working and obedience intelligence. They understand new commands very quickly and need plenty of mental challenges (training games, puzzles, etc.) to stay happy.

  • Coat: Medium-length, weather-resistant double coat.
  • Colors: Blue merle, red merle, black, or red — all can have white and/or tan markings.
  • Eyes: Can be brown, blue, amber, or even two different colors (heterochromia).
  • Tail: Many Aussies have naturally bobbed tails; others are docked.

Health Considerations

Common health concerns include:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Epilepsy
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
  • Collie eye anomaly (CEA)
  • Multidrug sensitivity (MDR1 gene mutation)

Responsible breeders test for these conditions before breeding.

Best Home Environment

Australian Shepherds do best in:

  • Homes with space to run and play — farms, large yards, or active families.
  • Environments where they can stay mentally and physically busy.
  • Families willing to invest time in training, socialization, and daily exercise.

They’re not ideal for apartment living unless their exercise needs are met consistently.

Grooming

  • Brushing: 2–3 times a week (more during shedding seasons).
  • Bathing: Every 6–8 weeks or as needed.
  • Shedding: Moderate to heavy, especially during spring and fall.
